About Year5Maths

Last updated: 13 April 2026

Free maths practice for Australian students. No paywall. No data collection. No strings.

Year5Maths is a free online maths practice platform for Australian primary school students in Year 3 and Year 5. Every question, every feature, and every design decision starts from the same place: what helps a child actually improve at maths?

Who we are

Year5Maths is built and maintained by Useful Things Co Pty Ltd (ABN 70 696 364 851), an Australian digital venture studio. We build practical, thoughtfully designed products — and Year5Maths is one of them.

We are an independent educational resource. We are not affiliated with any school, government body, or assessment authority.

Why we built it

Australian primary students benefit enormously from regular, low-stakes maths practice. Yet most quality practice resources sit behind paywalls, require account registration, or collect personal data about children.

We thought that was wrong. So we built something different.

Year5Maths gives every student access to a full adaptive maths practice experience — no subscription, no sign-up, no email address required. You open the page, enter a first name, and start practising. When you close the tab, nothing is stored anywhere.

How it works

Each practice test uses an adaptive three-stage model designed to meet students where they are:

The result is a 30-question test that adjusts in real time, so a student who finds early questions straightforward is quickly stretched, while a student who needs more support isn't left behind or discouraged.

Scoring is weighted by difficulty. Getting a hard question right counts for more than getting an easy one right — which means the score genuinely reflects what a student can do, not just how many questions they attempted.

Across both year levels, Year5Maths contains 807 original questions aligned to the Australian Curriculum Version 9.0, covering:

All questions were written specifically for this platform. They are not sourced from any official assessment materials.

Results are presented in two views: a child-friendly label (Superstar, Great Work, Getting There, Keep Practising) for the student, and a Parent View toggle that shows percentage scores, topic-by-topic breakdowns, and A–F grades for parents or teachers who want the detail.

Our commitment to child safety

This platform was built with children's safety and privacy at its centre.

No accounts. No registration. There is no mechanism to create an account on Year5Maths. Students cannot be identified, tracked, or profiled.

No personal data collection. The first name entered before a test lives only in your browser's memory for the duration of the session. It is never sent to our servers, never saved to cookies, and never stored anywhere. When the tab closes, it is gone.

No tracking or analytics. We do not use Google Analytics, tracking pixels, or any third-party monitoring tools that would capture information about how individuals use the site.

Child-directed advertising only. We display contextual advertisements through Google AdSense on landing pages only. No advertisements appear on any test page. All ad units are tagged for child-directed content, which disables interest-based advertising and remarketing. We comply with Australia's Children's Online Privacy Code (2026), the Australian Privacy Act 1988, and the National Principles for Child Safe Organisations.

Zero-trace testing. A student can complete a full practice test, see their results, and close the browser without leaving any trace of their session on any server anywhere.
